Montgomery House_
Montgomery House is the flagship of a new deluxe aparthotel brand, MH Hotels, being rolled out in premium locations across the United Kingdom.
We were asked to create proposals for an Aparthotel for a site within the Headingley Conservation Area. An existing two-storey former Library, now derelict, currently fills the site but is in a poor state of disrepair and is generally detrimental to the street scene and wider conservation area.
The proposal had to navigate the strict planning requirements of the Headingley Conservation Area, enhancing its setting within the context.
Working within the tight constraints of the site, which is irregular and bounded by roads on three sides, we proposed a three-storey Aparthotel. The mansard roof form blends the new construction in with its surrounding when viewed from afar, while a more contemporary face is presented at street level.
We propose to keep and reuse the existing structure of the former library, and to extend the building upwards with a lightweight timber structure above.
The refurbishment and conversion of the existing building to form an aparthotel provides 9 new studio apartments in a sustainable, market-aware proposal, that creates a contemporary take on the art deco architectural style.
IIVI Architects acted as lead consultants for the design and development of the proposal, developing the planning stage design through to construction.
