IIVI_022 - Old Biggin' Farm_

We were asked to create a new home which crucially would improve the setting in this rural area, it needed to marry together the architectural approach with the picturesque landscape using high design quality throughout.

Throughout the design process we prioritised architectural quality, design and attractiveness within the landscape. We proposed a modern take on a traditional rural dwelling, focusing on form and proportion, forging a relationship with the landscape and striking topography. We worked closely with the client, who had lived at the site for 30 years to develop a family home, which met their needs and allowed them to enjoy the landscape around them.

The dwelling is conceived as a solid, submerged lower ground floor containing bedroom accommodation with a lightweight open-plan first floor with large living spaces. To the rear is a more functional block which houses circulation, storage and bathrooms. This approach reduced the visible mass overall and enabled the composition of contemporary architectural form which respected the landscape.

The use of materials and subtle reference to local architecture provide a contemporary solution that works with its contextual setting. Local stone from the original house was utilised as part of the net zero carbon strategy, whilst complementing the vernacular materials of the area. Timber is used to soften and break up the overall mass of dwelling, enabling it to weather into its surroundings.

The clean silhouette and double height glazed elements provide a transparent and contemporary architectural form within the landscape. The considered use of materials and reference to the vernacular architecture, have resulted in a design response that works in context whilst at the same time, is a contemporary piece of design.
