IIVI_030 - Park Farm House_

The radical retrofit of a 18th Century Farmhouse aiming to be among the first EnerPHit Plus projects in the UK. EnerPHit Plus has renewable energy requirements in addition to the building fabric requirements of the classic EnerPHit (Passivhaus retrofit) standard.

This refurbishment and single-storey extension to the18th Century Farmhouse creates a generous volume for living and entertaining. The ground floor previously suffered from low ceiling heights, poor natural light and convoluted circulation.

A timber stair now descends through a newly created double height space to form a dramatic entrance. The ground floor is finished in end-grain parquet blocks. Full-width timber framed sliding doors lead to the garden, which is newly landscaped to enhance biodiversity.

A master suite is created over the first floor, with a generous dressing room and ensuite bathroom. Full height doors and cupboards celebrate the high ceilings at this level. Douglas fir joinery is used throughout the house to create a consistent colour palette, yet with subtly contrasting timber cut and grain varieties.

The building is formed of two contrasting volumes. The existing Farmhouse is a solid ‘living’ structure  and the new extension is transparent, open to panoramic views of the garden, and filled with natural light from sunrise to sunset.

A limited palette of natural materials and tactile elements were chosen to reflect the surrounding landscape. Oak flooring and coved ceilings, contrast with expanses of frameless, thermally insulated glass. A contemporary home that both respects and takes advantage of its extraordinary setting.
